What is the effect of PFAS on humans?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When determining the exact risk that any substance poses to human beings, we need to answer 3 big questions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>How much of it is present in the environment?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know PFAS can be present in our drinking water and a lot of the products we use every day.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How likely are we to come into contact with it?<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS chemicals appear fairly often in day-to-day living, and very often for people working in environments where these chemicals are used.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much exposure is dangerous?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t know this yet. What are the known health effects of PFAS or forever chemicals?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the exact exposure needed to cause health complications is unclear, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/policy-evidence-campaigns\/environmental-sustainability\/sustainability-reports-surveys-and-campaigns\/cleaning-up-uk-drinking-water\/#:~:text=PFAS%20been%20linked%20to%20a,the%20development%20of%20unborn%20children.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">there\u00a0are proven risks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>High exposure to PFAS chemicals has been proven to cause the following problems:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Higher cholesterol and potential obesity&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased fertility or high blood pressure in pregnant women&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A number of developmental difficulties in children that can range from low birth weight to accelerated puberty&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Negative effects on the immune system that may hurt the body\u2019s ability to fight infection or respond to vaccines<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The term PFSAS could describe any one of over 15,000 synthetic chemicals. Most of the health research available right now only focuses on the most well-known and most often-used&nbsp;chemicals.&nbsp;So,&nbsp;in essence, there could be other problems that simply haven\u2019t been well-documented yet.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10); \" id=\"chapter-3\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"do-pfas\">3. <strong>Do PFAS cause cancer?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the big question. Has exposure to PFAS been linked to cancer? Yes. There is substantial evidence to link its connection to kidney, prostate, and testicular&nbsp;cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has now classified perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), as cancer-causing, or carcinogenic (Group 1). This is why industries&nbsp;that rely on known PFAS-rich chemicals are now stepping back and studying the effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) identified a number of health risks for firefighters and airport employees who use Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFF) to fight petroleum-based&nbsp;fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flame retardant foams and materials have been revealed to contain some of the highest levels of PFAS of any widely used products. Researchers found that elevated blood levels of&nbsp;perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS, a specific type of PFAS) were linked to a higher risk of developing testicular cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an example of a high-risk substance being used in high volume. Not everyone who works with or around PFAS chemicals will be subject to this level of exposure, but the data is still&nbsp;alarming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10); \" id=\"chapter-4\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"pfas-regulations\"><strong>4. PFAS regulations around the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your business exports your products or imports supplies\/materials from other countries, it\u2019s a good idea to know the global landscape when it comes to PFAS. Most nations have acknowledged&nbsp;the negative effects of forever chemicals, but they are all moving to ban\/phase out PFAS use at various speeds. It\u2019s also important to know that each country will have their own regulatory and&nbsp;government bodies overseeing chemical management.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">North America&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the US, national oversight is managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while&nbsp;military aspects are managed by the&nbsp;Department of&nbsp;Defense&nbsp;(DoD). There are also unique state-by-state regulations that are managed by various private agencies similar to the EPA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Canada,&nbsp;Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC)&nbsp;monitors&nbsp;regulations, with support from each corresponding provincial government. However,&nbsp;in terms of regulations, you will not find significant differences between the provinces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Europe<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The management of PFAS falls under the following regulations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>EU Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulations&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The European Chemicals Agency\u2019s (ECHA) EU PFAS Restriction Proposal, which is likely to become effective as early as 2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) maintains a dynamic list of PFAS and classifications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Australia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Australian Government has adopted a combination of regulatory acts and voluntary approaches to manage and dispose of PFAS. This includes the 2018 Intergovernmental Agreement on a National&nbsp;Framework for Responding to PFAS Contamination between the Federal Government with state and territory governments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, importers need to be compliant with the regulations and standards listed in the Industrial Chemicals Act of 2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Asia<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>China, Japan, and South Korea are moving to ban PFAS in accordance with the Stockholm Convention on POP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In recent years, we\u2019ve also seen:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>China adding PFOA and PFOS to its List of New Pollutants for Priority Management to eliminate\/restrict in March 2023&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Korea announcing its 3rd Basic Plan (2021-2025) for the management\/elimination of POPs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10); \" id=\"chapter-5\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"how-to\"><strong>5.
