PFAS have also been found in more than&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/investigations\/2023\/11\/11\/pfas-forever-chemicals-detected-in-water-systems-that-serve-46-million\/71528470007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in four public drinking&nbsp;systems<\/a>&nbsp;in the United States which affect around 46 million people!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading these articles can feel shocking. Whether you\u2019re a chemical safety manager or health &amp; safety professional it\u2019s important to know how dangerous PFAS can be and the risks they may&nbsp;carry. You must monitor all the chemicals on site and the packaging. What is PFAS? What does PFAS stand for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS stands for Per and Polyfluorinated Substances. You may have also heard them called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/blog\/forever-chemicals-a-problem-forever\/\">forever&nbsp;chemicals<\/a>.\u201d This is a bit of an umbrella term that could include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all manufactured chemicals that have been widely used since the 1940s.&nbsp; Most recently, they\u2019ve been used to create a coating that resists heat, water, oils\/grease, or&nbsp;stains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20); \" id=\"chapter-2\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"what-are\"><strong>2. What are the health risks of PFAS chemicals?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research in recent years has revealed these chemicals could be harmful to humans or animals. The exact extent of the threat is still being researched; however, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/pfas-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)<\/a>\u00a0has linked PFAS chemicals to the following threats:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cancer<\/strong>: Can lead to an increased risk of kidney, prostate, and testicular cancer.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reproductive<\/strong>: Might lead to high blood pressure in pregnant women and\/or lowered fertility.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Developmental<\/strong>: Could lead to either low birth weight or accelerated puberty. What does your company need to know about PFAS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the biggest challenges we face is that PFAS chemicals are incredibly hard to detect, dispose of, or destroy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your company is US-based, the EPA has provided&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/pfas\/us-state-resources-about-pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a state-by-state breakdown<\/a>&nbsp;of exactly what&nbsp;your organisation needs to know about PFAS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have facilities in Canada, it\u2019s important to know that the Government of Canada has banned the manufacturing, use, or sale of the following chemicals, with some&nbsp;exceptions:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and precursors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids (LC-PFCAs), their salts and precursors&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have facilities overseas, The European Commission recently proposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/ALL\/?uri=SWD%3A2020%3A249%3AFIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set of actions to address<\/a> the use of PFAS in an effort to phase them out of the EU.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20); \" id=\"chapter-4\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"what-can\"><strong>4. What can your company do to control PFAS?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your industry and your geographical location(s) will dictate how your company handles PFAS, in terms of use, reporting, and disposal.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, any workplace can follow these three guidelines:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Find every product that contains PFAS in your workplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem with these chemicals is they can appear in so many places. They could appear in your fire extinguisher or your cleaning products. If they\u2019re not in your manufactured products,&nbsp;they could be in the materials found in your packaging items.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best place to start is in section 3 of your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/blog\/sds-checklist-what-should-you-do-when-you-receive-an-sds\/\">safety data\u00a0sheet<\/a>. There you can look for the term \u201cfluorinated\u201d or \u201cperfluorinated surfactants\u201d which references PFAS.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Create a plan to remove or phase them out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve identified all the sources, create an action plan to remove or phase them out of your operations. Don\u2019t forget to communicate this action plan to all levels of your&nbsp;organisation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This action plan may include simple items such as replacing your workplace\u2019s carpeting. Find out how you can dispose of them safely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Section 13 of the safety data sheet goes over safe disposal options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, safely disposing of these chemicals is not easily done and scientists are still debating the best way to do so. At present, the most popular options are incineration, landfilling,&nbsp;and wastewater treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You probably don\u2019t have the means or the facilities to do this yourself.
