Lost time injuries and lost time injury frequency rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When assessing safety performance, one of the most important KPIs to track is lost time injury frequency rate. As any seasoned safety pro can attest, knowing how to calculate and report on LTIFR to your executive team is key. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But before we discuss how to calculate it, let\u2019s start off with a few helpful definitions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lost Time Injury<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>any injury sustained by an employee while on the job that prevents them from being able to perform their job for at least one day\/shift.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the number of lost time injuries that occurred during the reporting period. Most companies choose to calculate LTIFR per 1 million man-hours worked. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t        <\/section>\n\n<section class=\"Pegasus__Container w-full   relative h-fit  text-content-dark mobile-stacking-standard is-layout-flow wp-block-pegasus-container-is-layout-flow\" style=\"  padding-bottom:0; \" id=\"chapter-3\">\n\t        \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t        \t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"relative h-full is-flex-layout flex flex-col justify-start  w-full\">\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\" id=\"section2\">2. Calculating lost time injury frequency rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Measuring your LTIFR is actually easier than you think. The formula is as follows: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>([Number of lost time injuries in the reporting period] x 1,000,000) \/ (Total hours worked in the reporting period).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, let\u2019s use an example to further illustrate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After reviewing and compiling your safety data, you\u2019ve determined that there were six lost time injuries in the past year at your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/ehs-software\/safety-management-software\/\">manufacturing<\/a> company and a total of 2,500,000 hours worked. To calculate your LTIFR, simply plug those numbers into your formula: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(6 x 1,000,000) \/ 2,500,000<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>LTIFR = 2.4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And voila! Your company\u2019s LTIFR is 2.4, which means there were 2.4 lost time injuries for every one million man-hours worked. Below are 3 strategies safety professionals can try to minimize lost time injuries and improve workplace safety: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Build a robust safety culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The first thing every EHS leader should do is create a safety culture that promotes worker engagement and participation in safety at every level of the organization. Your culture should focus on employee education and company-wide safety awareness. Tactics that can help with this include introducing safety committees and hosting toolbox talks.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Conduct regular hazard assessments<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before employees begin work on any job, ensure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/ehs-software\/risk-management-software\/job-hazard-analysis-software\/\">hazard assessments<\/a> are being conducted and immediately uploaded into your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/ehs-software\/safety-management-software\/\">safety management system<\/a>. This way risks can be documented and controls can be put in place quickly to help prevent incidents from happening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Invest in employee training<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees should never stop learning while on the job and ongoing training should play a big part in your continuous improvement plan.
