What is the <a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/about-us#:~:text=Greenhouse%20Gas%20Protocol%20provides%20standards,and%20manage%20climate-warming%20emissions.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">greenhouse gas protocol<\/a>? This is a<br \/>\nset of guidelines and standards which help organizations measure and report their <a href=\"\/en-ca\/blog\/greenhouse-gases-co2e-carbon-and-more-common-sustainability-terms-you-should-know\">greenhouse gas emissions<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>First published in 2001, the first edition of the GHG protocol was developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). This<br \/>\nwas in an effort to help create an internationally standardized framework for businesses, NGOs, and governments to use when it came to their greenhouse gas accounting and Scope 1, 2, and 3<br \/>\nemissions. <\/p>\n<h2>Why is it important?<\/h2>\n<p>This GHG framework is important because it provides a sense of standardization, where all organizations can adhere to the same GHG protocols and standards. This also makes a business\u2019s<br \/><!-- -->greenhouse gas accounting more reliable because it\u2019s following the guidelines outlined by the GHG protocol. It\u2019s also particularly important to investors and stakeholders because it allows them to<br \/>\neasily compare reports from different organizations to decide who to work with.  <\/p>\n<p>Businesses can truly benefit from adhering to the GHG accounting protocol because it provides them with greater insight into their sustainability performance. With this transparency,<br \/><!-- -->organizations can make data-driven decisions to reduce their emissions and make the business more resilient when it comes to certain disruptions. Not only is this more cost effective, but it also<br \/>\nhelps demonstrate a sense of commitment to investors and stakeholders who value an organization\u2019s sustainability strategy.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/rsz_3pexels-pixabay-247763-10.webp\" alt=\"rsz_3pexels-pixabay-247763.jpg?width=1200&amp;height=800&amp;name=rsz_3pexels-pixabay-247763.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\"><\/p>\n<h2>How is the GHG protocol connected to certain frameworks and standards?<\/h2>\n<p>Think of the GHG protocol as one of the building blocks needed to adhere to a specific framework or regulation. If you are in the United Kingdom, for instance, you will most likely report to<br \/><!-- -->the <g id=\"gid_1\">Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures (TCFD)<\/g> or <g id=\"gid_2\">Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR)<\/g>. As part of these frameworks, your organization will have to<br \/>\ndisclose several different elements, including your GHG emissions. The way to comply and accurately report your organization\u2019s emissions, will be by following the GHG protocol.<br \/><!-- -->Think of the GHG protocol as the gold standard in measuring and reporting an organization\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions. This methodology is followed when reporting to various other standards<br \/>\nlike the TCFD or SECR, which have additional location-specific standards.    <\/p>\n<h2>What organizations does it concern?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the GHG Protocol\u2019s official website,<a href=\"https:\/\/ghgprotocol.org\/#:~:text=More%20than%209%20out%20of,to%20CDP%20use%20GHG%20Protocol.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90% of Fortune 500<br \/>\ncompanies<\/a> who report to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/info\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)<\/a> follow the GHG protocol. As previously<br \/>\nmentioned, all organizations must follow the GHG protocol if they would like to submit their carbon accounting reports to their regional framework. <\/p>\n<p>There are specific criteria you must be able to fulfil when submitting your emissions reports to specific frameworks like the Task Force on Climate-Related Disclosures (TCFD), Streamlined<br \/>\nEnergy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), or the Corporate Social Responsibility Directive (CSRD).<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your organization is in the United Kingdom or in Europe (excluding Switzerland and Norway which have their own regulations)it must be publicly listed, have more than 500<br \/>\nemployees, or have over\u00a3500 million turnover annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If your organization is in California, in the United States, it must make over$1 billion in revenue annually.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If your organization is in Canada it must befederally regulated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Organizations that don\u2019t fit these criteria could also choose to submit their carbon accounting to shareholders or investors.
