He shares the latest performance metrics and highlights of the last few months when Brian mentions that investors and board members are very keen on sustainability and how the organization can showcase its initiatives in this area.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a new focus that we have to start preparing for,\u201d Brian tells William. \u201cLet\u2019s slowly begin to gather as many metrics as we can about our GHGs, like our total CO<sub>2<\/sub>e, and carbon emissions.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>William nods his head in agreement, but in reality, he\u2019s never heard of the term GHG or knows how to begin to gather information on carbon emissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you just beginning your sustainability journey and trying to figure out how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/blog\/the-road-to-corporate-resilience-connecting-ehs-to-esg\">connect EHS to ESG<\/a>? Read this blog to understand more about the following terms you should know to help get you started:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Greenhouse gases (GHGs) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CO<sub>2<\/sub>e <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.ecoonline.com\/nam\/guides\/ghg-reporting-how-to-keep-your-investors-and-the-environment-happy\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/65a46220-b26d-4566-bff5-0994039927c9-20.webp\" alt=\"65a46220-b26d-4566-bff5-0994039927c9.png\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">What are greenhouse gases (GHGs)?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Greenhouse gases, also known as GHGs, are those which trap heat from the sun, raising the atmosphere\u2019s temperature. Over the past few decades, there has been a drastic increase in GHGs in the atmosphere due to human activities like burning fossil fuels, waste, and trees (among many other things). This results in climate change and global warming, affecting all corners of the world.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following greenhouse gases, also known as the Kyoto basket, are under the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/kyoto_protocol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kyoto Protocol.<\/a> What is the Kyoto Protocol? This is an international treaty which was adopted in 1997 to help control and reduce the amount of GHGs emissions. Today, there are various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/blog\/esg-reporting-frameworks-and-standards-understanding-the-difference\">ESG-related reporting frameworks and standards<\/a> that organizations must follow to help curb the effects of climate change.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may have noticed the term <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/global-warming-potential\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GWP or Global Warming Potential<\/a> in the above table. This refers to how much a gas can heat up the atmosphere over approximately 100 years.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first gas, carbon dioxide, for instance, has a GWP of 1 because all other gases are in reference to it. Methane or CH<g id=\"gid_0\">4<\/g>, for example, heats the atmosphere 29.8 times more than carbon dioxide over a 100-year period. Because of this, it\u2019s important that you not only measure your carbon dioxide emissions, but all the above gases to get an accurate view of your organization\u2019s GHG emissions.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The importance of carbon dioxide<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), let\u2019s dive into this important gas. This is one of the most common greenhouse gases which is released into the atmosphere by human activity like burning fossil fuels, trees, and waste. Unfortunately, this gas is the main culprit when it comes to climate change.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many refer to their GHG emissions as carbon emissions which is inaccurate and confusing. As mentioned above, all other GHGs are measured in reference to carbon dioxide; however, as stated earlier, you should not limit your emissions measurement to just this gas. A better way of referencing your greenhouse gas emissions is carbon dioxide equivalent \u2013 also known as CO<sub>2<\/sub>e.   <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Ecometrica20migration20-20blog-20greenhouse20gases-4.webp\" alt=\"Ecometrica%20migration%20-%20blog-%20greenhouse%20gases.jpg?width=1200&amp;amp;height=800&amp;amp;name=Ecometrica%20migration%20-%20blog-%20greenhouse%20gases.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does carbon dioxide equivalent mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because there are so many different greenhouse gases with different Global Warming Potentials, you need to convert them all to the same unit to find your total emissions value. This unit is known as CO<sub>2<\/sub>e or carbon dioxide equivalent (CDE).  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take the following example: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you find that one kg of methane is released due to your organization\u2019s activities, you would multiply this by its GWP to get the CO<sub>2<\/sub> equivalent: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> 1kg of CH<sub>4<\/sub> x 29.8 = 29.8 kg CO<sub>2<\/sub>e. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps standardize all calculations, so they are easily compared to previous calculations you\u2019ve made or other organizations in your industry who are looking at the same greenhouse gases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the term carbon can be confusing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon is one of the most common elements in the world, as it is found in all living things. It\u2019s represented by the letter C and has an atomic weight of 12. It\u2019s also one of the elements that, when combined with two molecules of oxygen, makes carbon dioxide.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What can be confusing about carbon is many refer to their GHG emissions as carbon accounting, carbon emissions, carbon reporting, carbon footprint, etc. This is very misleading because people are actually referring to their total GHG or carbon dioxide emissions when using these terms. Don\u2019t let the word carbon fool you!   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to understand the many elements that go into your emissions reporting, but you\u2019ve already taken the first step by educating yourself on the topic.
