Managers consistently report a much higher understanding of their company&#8217;s crisis management process<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industry matters: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/construction\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/construction\/\">construction<\/a> workers are most concerned about serious workplace injuries, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/ehs-software\/lone-worker\/staysafe-utilities\/utilities\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/utilities\/\">utilities<\/a> workers rank cyberattacks as their primary risk<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2vh\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you consider to be the greatest threat to your workplace operations? The answer will change depending on your industry, but does your role within the company affect this perception as well? What about location?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/resources\/the-latest-workplace-safety-report\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/resources\/the-latest-workplace-safety-report\/\">2026 Workplace Safety Report<\/a>, we asked more than 5,900 employees about their understanding of crisis management in their workplace. There have been several high-profile cyberattacks and data breaches in the UK and Ireland in the recent years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2025\/cyber-security-breaches-survey-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK government survey<\/a>&nbsp;in 2025 found that&nbsp;approximately&nbsp;612,000 UK businesses and 61,000 UK charities&nbsp;had been subject to a cyber security breach or attack in the preceding 12 months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Ireland, it was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/business\/2025\/04\/04\/almost-90-of-irish-companies-hit-by-disruption-or-financial-loss-due-to-cyberattacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;in 2025 that&nbsp;nearly 90%&nbsp;of businesses \u2018had suffered some form of financial loss and commercial disruption as a result of a cyberattack\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We noted that Irish workers ranked severe weather or natural disaster events notably higher than the UK, at 24% vs. 16%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, our demographic data suggests that concern about cyberattacks or data breaches was more pronounced among UK and Ireland respondents who identified as managers (47%) vs. those who identified as workers (35%). Both groups were concerned about serious workplace injuries or medical emergencies at the same rate (27%). Managers were also more concerned about supply chain or logistics disruptions (24%) than workers were (16%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2vh\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Top USA and Canada business risks<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For workers in the USA and Canada, serious workplace injury or medical emergency holds the top position as the greatest perceived business risk. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyber.gc.ca\/en\/guidance\/ransomware-threat-outlook-2025-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Centre for Cyber Security<\/a> identifies ransomware as the top threat to critical infrastructure, with incidents growing an average of 26% year-over-year since 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent examples include the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareitnews.com\/news\/lockbit-ransomware-group-apologizes-childrens-hospital-cyberattack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 LockBit attack<\/a> on Toronto&#8217;s Hospital for Sick Children, a 2024 <a href=\"https:\/\/wpsites.ucalgary.ca\/jacobson-cpsc\/2024\/09\/04\/the-london-drugs-ransomware-breach-a-comprehensive-review-of-impact-and-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attack on London Drugs<\/a> that disrupted pharmacy operations across western Canada, and a March 2025 ransomware <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/nova-scotia\/committee-to-discuss-n-s-power-breach-that-allowed-theft-of-280-000-customers-data-1.7025159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attack on Nova Scotia Power<\/a> that exposed the personal and financial data of nearly 280,000 customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the USA, severe weather ranks most prominently among concerns at 28%, compared to just 23% in Canada. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2024 brought 27 separate billion-dollar <a href=\"https:\/\/climateprogramportal.org\/resource\/billion-dollar-weather-and-climate-disasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather and climate disaster events<\/a> across the country, with a combined economic toll estimated between $479 billion and $532 billion. The January 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7344568\/2025-billion-dollar-climate-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles wildfires<\/a> alone caused an estimated $61 billion in damages and forced over 200,000 evacuations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our demographic data suggests that concern about cyberattacks or data breaches was more pronounced among USA and Canada respondents who identified as managers (31%) vs. those who identified as workers (21%). Agriculture,&nbsp;forestry&nbsp;and fishing were&nbsp;identified as having the highest injury rate among the listed sectors (12.7), followed closely by transportation and storage (12.5).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyberlands.io\/topsecuritybreachesdenmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most digital counties in the world<\/a>, it\u2019s perhaps not surprising that cyberattack or data breach ranked as the highest perceived threat in Denmark. Danish companies and state-bodies have been subject to several high-profile security breaches in recent years, including the cyberattack on wind turbine maker Vestas is 2021 and data breach that hit the National Bank of Denmark in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While more Nordic respondents who identified as managers expressed concern about a cyberattack or data breach (34%) vs. workers (30%), we noted this difference was not as pronounced as in the other regions surveyed. A wider discrepancy was seen in workers fears about pandemics or infectious disease outbreaks (34%) vs. managers (24%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2vh\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Top business risks \u2013 industry focus<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We took a special focus on 3 industries in our survey; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/manufacturing\/\">manufacturing<\/a> (14% of total respondents), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/construction\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/industries\/construction\/\">construction<\/a> (10% of total respondents) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-ca\/ehs-software\/lone-worker\/staysafe-utilities\/utilities\/\">utilities<\/a> (approximately 4% of total respondents). More concerningly, 20% of USA workers and 23% of Canadian workers say they are not aware of any crisis plan at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, across North America, 21% of workers are unaware of a crisis plan. This means roughly one in five workers may walk into a crisis scenario with no understanding of what their organization expects of them.
