One in three lone workers was hurt in the past year, in situations where no colleague was present to help.

Confidence in employers has dropped seven points, and the two countries have swapped positions: Canada led at 73% in 2025 and now trails at 55%.

Stress and mental health (48%) and fatigue (47%) top the concern list, ahead of accidents, and extreme weather (both 42%). North American lone workers report higher concern than their UKI and Nordic counterparts across nearly every risk category.

Introduction

Across North America right now, a lineman is restoring power on a remote stretch of line. A night-shift technician is walking through a facility that won’t see another person until morning.

None of this work is unusual. What makes it consequential is what happens if something goes wrong and how long it takes before anyone notices.

EcoOnline’s 2026 Workplace Safety Report suggests that question deserves far more attention than it’s getting. In lone working, it frequently passes unexamined because incidents sustained alone are systematically under-reported. In 2025, Canadian lone workers were the more confident group by a comfortable margin. In 2026 they report the lowest confidence in the region with an eighteen-point collapse in a single year.

Set that against the accident data and the warning is hard to miss. More than a third of American lone workers and a quarter of Canadian lone workers were hurt while working alone in the past year, and fewer of them than last year believe their employer is taking that seriously.

Perception is not a soft metric here. It’s the mechanism through which a lone worker program actually functions. Workers who doubt their employer’s commitment are less likely to report near misses, less likely to refuse a job that feels wrong, and less likely to use check-in and monitoring tools consistently. Confidence drives adoption, and adoption is what turns a policy into protection. This is why employers must rethink lone worker safety.

6. The risks lone workers name first: stress, fatigue, accidents

When asked what worries them most, North American lone workers named stress and mental health issues, fatigue, and accidents.

Three observations stand out:

1. The top two risks are invisible. Stress and fatigue don’t announce themselves. You won’t catch them on a walk-round, in a PPE check, or during an equipment inspection. They surface only through regular human contact, honest conversation, and systems that flag when something is off. And they’re not just wellbeing issues; fatigue degrades reaction time, hazard perception and decision quality, which means it silently amplifies every other risk on the list.

2. North American concern runs hotter than elsewhere. Across most risk categories, North American lone workers rate their concern above counterparts in UKI and the Nordics, sometimes by as much as 6 to 10 percentage points, and particularly on extreme weather, accidents, and chemical exposure. Extreme weather tying with accidents at 42% is notable in itself; it reflects a workforce operating across vast geography and increasingly volatile conditions, often far from shelter or assistance.

3. American lone workers report higher concern than Canadian lone workers in every single cateogry measured. A consistent gap of that kind is unlikely to be a reporting artifact. It points to American lone workers facing a broader and more intense range of risk exposures, which aligns with their higher accident rate (36% vs 27%) and their higher prevalence of lone working overall (38% vs 30%).

7. What OSHA and Canadian regulators expect

Neither country has a single, comprehensive lone worker law. That is not the same as lone working being unregulated.

In the United States, working alone is not prohibited, and there is no blanket federal rule against it. The primary obligation flows from Section 5(a)(1) of the OSHA Act — the General Duty Clause, which requires employers to furnish a workplace free from recognized hazards causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm. Isolation itself isn’t the hazard; it’s a risk multiplier that turns a manageable incident into a catastrophic one.

One OSHA standard addresses lone work explicitly. 29 CFR 1915.84, in the shipyard employment standards, requires that whenever an employee is working alone, such as in a confined space or isolated location, the employer must account for that employee at regular intervals appropriate to the job throughout the shift. This must be done again at the end of the job or shift, by sight or verbal communication.

It formally applies to shipyards, but it is the clearest articulation in US regulation of what “accounting for a lone worker” actually means, and it’s widely treated as benchmark practice. OSHA’s workplace violence guidance for healthcare, social services, and late-night retail sets further expectations for public-facing lone work, recommending alarm systems, check-in procedures and training. Roughly half of US states also operate their own OSHA-approved plans, some with stricter requirements.

In Canada, there is no single federal lone worker statute, but most provinces have specific working alone regulations such Alberta’s OHS Code Part 28 and British Columbia’s OHS Regulation. This is layered on top of a general duty of care. Employers need to comply with provincial rules while also observing federal restrictions, including limits on working alone around live electrical equipment, confined spaces, and drowning hazards.

For employers operating across both countries, the practical takeaway is to build to the highest applicable standard rather than the minimum in each jurisdiction. A single, consistent, lone worker program is easier to run, easier to audit, and easier for workers to trust.

8. Building a lone worker safety program that works

This year’s findings highlight five priorities:

1. Count your lone workers honestly. Most organizations undercount, because they only tally roles that are lone working by design. Map the tasks, shifts and journeys where someone is temporarily out of reach: a single site visit, an hour in an unmanned area, the last stop of a route. That’s where the unmanaged exposure lives.

2. Assess by task and location, not job title. Identify lone working tasks, evaluate the hazards, set control measures, then monitor and review. Involve lone workers directly; The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) is explicit that you should talk to workers about the work they do and get their input on solutions, because they’re the ones who know where the plan breaks down.

3. Sway your training and supervision toward younger workers. With 42% of 18–34s working alone, the largest lone worker cohort is also the least experienced. Don’t assume comfort with technology equals competence in isolation. Pair lone working assignments with explicit escalation training and early-tenure check-ins.

4. Treat stress and fatigue as safety controls, not HR programs. They are the two highest-ranked concerns. That means shift patterns, workload, call-out frequency, drive time, and routine human contact belong in your lone worker risk assessment alongside PPE and equipment checks.

5. Close the response-time gap and be seen doing it. For medical events, falls, violence, and weather exposure, the only control that matters is how fast someone knows and how fast help arrives. With confidence down seven points, communicate visibly: explain how location data is used, respect privacy, show workers the escalation path. Trust is what drives consistent use.

9. Choosing a lone worker device or app

A lone worker device or app only functions as a control measure if workers actually use it. Evaluate options against the risks your workforce named:

Panic button and discreet duress alerts<ins>:</ins> for aggression and assault, where an obvious alarm can escalate the situation.

Fall detection and non-movement alerts: for sudden illness, falls and working at heights, where the worker may be unable to raise an alarm themselves.

Timed sessions and automated check-ins: replacing manual check-ins that fail under pressure.

Low signal mode and satellite mode<ins>:</ins> because remote and isolated geography is a named HSE risk factor, and an alert that can’t send is no alert at all.

Live location visibility with privacy controls: visibility for responders and dignity for workers, which is what sustains adoption.

Two-way communication: so an alert becomes a conversation, not a guess.

Audit trails and reporting that sync with your wider EHS system, closing the underreporting gap.

EcoOnline’s lone worker software, powered by StaySafe, combines a mobile app with a cloud-based reporting hub, plus optional 24/7 professional monitoring for organizations that need round-the-clock response.

The bottom line

North America has the highest concentration of lone workers of any region we surveyed, and the highest lone worker accident rate. Those two facts alone would justify a serious review. What makes the picture urgent is the third: confidence in employers is falling at the same time, and in Canada it has fallen off a cliff.

The workers carrying this risk are younger than most organizations assume and concentrated in the most hazardous industries in the economy. The risks they fear most are stress, fatigue, sudden accidents, and extreme weather. These risks are precisely the ones that a traditional inspection regime will never detect.

None of that demands a rebuilt safety program. It demands counting your lone workers honestly, assessing the work as it’s performed, and making sure that when something goes wrong for someone working alone, the time between the incident and the response is measured in seconds rather than hours.

Explore the full findings on lone worker safety, chemical safety, crisis management and ESG in EcoOnline’s 2026 Workplace Safety Report.

Frequently asked questions

What is a lone worker?
A lone worker is someone who works by themselves, away from teammates and management during all or some of the day or night.

How many lone workers are there in North America?
Our 2026 Workplace Safety Report found that 35% of North American workers identify as lone workers, 38% in the USA, and 30% in Canada.

Does OSHA prohibit working alone?
No. There is no blanket federal rule against working alone in the United States.
