In some instances, they can be mandatory requirements, such as in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/sustainability-reporting\/csrd-reporting\">the EU and California under CSRD<\/a>&nbsp;and within the UK\u2019s ISSB standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that there&nbsp;are&nbsp;significant upsides to measuring the&nbsp;indirect&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/sustainability-software\/supply-chain-monitoring\">emissions&nbsp;within&nbsp;your value chain<\/a>.&nbsp;Without&nbsp;reporting&nbsp;your&nbsp;Scope 3&nbsp;emissions,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;impossible to get a true&nbsp;measure of the impact&nbsp;your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/blog\/what-is-a-carbon-footprint\">carbon footprint<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insights.ecoonline.com\/nam\/guides\/ghg-reporting-how-to-keep-your-investors-and-the-environment-happy\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/65a46220-b26d-4566-bff5-0994039927c9-8.webp\" alt=\"65a46220-b26d-4566-bff5-0994039927c9.png\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">What are Scope 3 emissions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scope 3 emissions are defined as \u201call indirect emissions (not included in scope 2) that occur in the value chain of the reporting company, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/scope-3-inventory-guidance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">both upstream and downstream emissions<\/a>\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that they are generated by other businesses connected with yours, such as, suppliers, distributors, end users, franchisees, waste disposal etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upstream emissions are produced by third parties that source, produce, and transport any raw materials and components that your organization uses. They also include business travel, employee&nbsp;commuting, leased assets and waste generated in operations. The full list includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Purchased goods and services&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Capital goods&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fuel and energy-related activities&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upstream transportation &amp; distribution&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waste generated in operations&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Business travel&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employee commuting&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upstream leased assets&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Downstream emissions include the transportation and distribution of activities or products leaving your premises. This includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Processing of sold products&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of sold products&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>End-of-life treatment of sold products&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Downstream leased assets&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Franchises&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investments&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">Why should companies measure their Scope 3 emissions?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scope 3 emissions can often be responsible for bulk of a company\u2019s total emissions. This makes them a perfect area to focus on, as reducing them can have a significant impact toward your&nbsp;organization\u2019s sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Pillar20520-20ESG20-20Blog20-20California20Emissions20Laws-7.webp\" alt=\"Pillar%205%20-%20ESG%20-%20Blog%20-%20California%20Emissions%20Laws.jpg?width=1200&amp;height=799&amp;name=Pillar%205%20-%20ESG%20-%20Blog%20-%20California%20Emissions%20Laws.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, reporting Scope 3 emissions is a requirement of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/sustainability-software\/science-based-targets\">Science Based Target initiative\u2019s (SBTi) Net Zero&nbsp;standard.<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/blog\/net-zero-standard-sbti\">SBTi\u2019s Net Zero Standard<\/a>&nbsp;framework, organizations pledge to halve emissions by 2030 and work toward&nbsp;to zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this, it requires near-term and long-term targets to be set. Both may require a significant reduction on Scope 3 emissions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the SBTi, if Scope 3 emissions total over 40% of your overall emissions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecoonline.com\/en-us\/glossary\/scope-1-scope-2-scope-3-emissions\">scope 1, 2 and 3<\/a>), you must&nbsp;set Scope 3 near-term targets that collectively cover at least 67% of Scope 3 emissions. Near-term science-based targets must be met within a 5- to 10-year period.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-term science-based targets must be met by 2050 or sooner. They cover 95% of Scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as 95% of Scope 3 emissions.
