Wildfires are a common hazard that occur across much of the world. Often caused by a combination of severe hot weather, wind and dry underbrush, wildfires can consume acres of land in minutes.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, nature is not always to blame; some wildfires are caused by us, such as with the recent wildfires in Greece, where\u00a076 people were\u00a0arrested for arson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recent reports suggest that there are around\u00a070,000 wildfires globally each\u00a0year<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 many of these occurring in\u00a0the United States, Canada, Australia and\u00a0Southern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The frequency and severity of wildfires is increasing<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Heat waves, droughts, and climate change\u00a0increase the risk, and alter the\u00a0behaviour<\/a>\u00a0of wildfires dramatically. Changes to the climate are resulting in more widespread fires and longer fire seasons, while we are also seeing an increase in the\u00a0intensity and frequency of wildfires.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, we have watched in horror at the severity of wildfires that consume vast swathes of land, taking with them natural habitats, homes, livelihoods and, most harrowingly, lives.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wildfires that have raged in Greece this summer have been\u00a0responsible for 23\u00a0fire-related deaths<\/a>, as well as the destruction of much of a National Forest, homes and farmland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wildfires this year have also been devastating in the United States, where\u00a0111 people lost their lives in Hawaii<\/a>, in a wildfire that has now been named\u00a0as the deadliest in modern US history.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, at the time of writing,\u00a0574 wildfires, covering 280,918 hectares of\u00a0land, are active in the US\u00a0right now.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wildfires and the risk to remote <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Organisations that operate within at-risk zones need to be aware of the dangers of wildfires and take steps to mitigate the risk to their employees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
