Patients experiencing pain, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, &nbsp;struggling with their mental health, or&nbsp;frustrated with long waits can be more likely to lash out, as are those who have been a victim of violence themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Situations such as these can endanger healthcare workers, especially if they are delivering care alone, or working in settings where they are out of sight of fellow members of staff, even&nbsp;temporarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The scale of the issue&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Healthcare employees account for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2021\/04\/who-are-our-health-care-workers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a014%<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0all workers in the US, yet they experience approximately<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/21650799211031233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a075%<\/a>\u00a0of all\u00a0non-fatal, intentional workplace injuries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health care and social service employees experience the highest rates of injuries caused by workplace violence, and are 5 times more likely to suffer an injury due to workplace violence\u00a0than their peers.\u00a0(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/iif\/oshwc\/cfoi\/workplace-violence-healthcare-2018.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BLS, 2018<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25595487\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a02015 survey<\/a>\u00a0found that 61% of home care workers reported experiencing workplace\u00a0violence annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1177\/21650799211031233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0survey<\/a>\u00a0of the period from February to May 2020, 44.4% of\u00a0nurses reported experiencing physical violence and 67.8% reported receiving verbal abuse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nursing assistants experience the most intentional, nonfatal, workplace injuries requiring time off work, of any occupation in the entire country. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/iif\/oshwc\/case\/osn-nursing-assistants-2015-19.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BLS, 2021<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From 2016 to 2020 there were 207 deaths due to workplace violence in the\u00a0 private healthcare and social assistance sectors. (<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/WPVHC\/Nurses\/Course\/Slide\/Unit1_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CDC, 2020<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\">The problem of underreporting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures are even more sobering if considering\u00a0the<a href=\"https:\/\/msutoday.msu.edu\/news\/2017\/study-works-to-reduce-health-care-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a0study into workplace violence in healthcare\u00a0settings by Michigan State University<\/a>\u00a0which revealed that such incidents of violence go grossly underreported, suggesting that up to 88% are not even documented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/news-sky-com.cdn.ampproject.org\/c\/s\/news.sky.com\/story\/amp\/more-than-72-000-assaults-on-nhs-staff-took-place-over-four-years-but-very-few-were-reported-to-police-sky-news-can-reveal-12601481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u00a02022\u00a0survey<\/a>\u00a0of healthcare workers by Sky News revealed that employees in caring professions often struggle with the decision to report attacks by patients, due to the fact that\u00a0they understand the perpetrator is suffering themselves in some way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other reasons for incidents going unreported could be lack of faith in the reporting system, a confusing or undefined reporting policy, or little opportunity during busy shifts for reflecting&nbsp;and reporting on incidents with the likelihood of submitting a report diminishing over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthcare workers can suffer negative professional, personal, or health outcomes as a result of exposure to violence in the workplace, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders,&nbsp;emotional exhaustion, or burnout.
