Implenia, a leading infrastructure services company, has been contracted by Region Stockholm Tunnelbana to carry out the tunnel excavation phase of the Blue Line expansion. This extensive project, initiated in 2021, is the largest undertaking for Stockholm’s tunnelbana since its inception in the 1950s, involving the creation of new tunnels to enhance connectivity across the city. The excavation is set for completion in 2026, preparing the way for underground trains to become operational by 2030. Managing hazardous substances safely is a top priority, as workers operate in challenging underground conditions using heavy machinery and explosives. 

 
Petra Jillhag Dahlén, Implenia’s Environment Coordinator, and her team leverage EcoOnline’s Chemical Manager solution to ensure that all chemicals are documented, properly evaluated, and safely handled. The team follows a rigorous process to verify that only approved chemicals with green or yellow hazard ratings are used, ensuring compliance with Swedish construction safety standards. Red-rated substances are used only when absolutely necessary, with clear justifications documented in the system.

Weekly safety meetings ensure that frontline workers are reminded of the most hazardous substances they encounter. The platform supports these efforts by providing quick access to chemical information and procedures, although Petra emphasises that proactive training is key, as immediate access to SDS is often impractical during an incident. 

 
3. Effective Risk Management: 
One of the key modules Petra uses in EcoOnline is the “Riskbedömningar” (Risk Assessment) feature. This tool enables Implenia to document safety steps specific to each chemical, including expected exposure levels and duration, to ensure safe interaction with each substance. By using this assessment module, Petra can evaluate and improve how chemicals are handled, promoting safer practices for workers in the tunnels. 

 
4. Cost-Efficient Waste Management: 
In her role as Envionmental Coordinator, Petra is focused not just on the use of materials but their safe, sustainabile disposal. By encouraging the separation of recyclable materials, Implenia has achieved significant cost savings. For example, properly sorted wood waste costs 300 SEK per tonne for disposal, compared to 1000 SEK for mixed materials. This practice not only supports the project’s sustainability goals but also reduces operational expenses.
