There’s a direct correlation between the numbers of hazards spotted and the reduction in our accidents.

Director of SHEQ

A paper-based system vulnerable to errors

Before digitising their health and safety processes, up to 200 people in McAleer & Rushe were using a paper based, in-house system to report hazards. Aside from issues with delays in reporting, this system left the potential for ‘fudging’ data when filling out reports all at once.

According to Director of SHEQ Declan McLogan it also led to several other problems for the business:

  • No capabilities around hazard/incident reporting and tracking: With a paper-based system it was difficult to follow up on incidents and ensure related actions had been completed.
  • Little to no analysis of safety data: Their paper-based turned hazard collecting into a somewhat tick box exercise, leaving virtually no time to focus on areas that needed attention.

Live updates and data collection

Using the EcoOnline system has brought live updates on hazards and incidents to Declan McLogan and his team.

Using the mobile app, 14,000 hazards have been reported across 25 sites in the UK in 12 months. The mobile app has allowed for on-the-go hazard reporting, with employees being able to attach images and pinpoint exact locations for their observations.

With the app and Incident Reporting Software, data collected during the week are now fed into a monthly report. Management can now focus on what has gone wrong and areas that need attention.

Increased employee engagement and managerial oversight

Declan worked closely with the Customer Success team in EcoOnline to identify the solution that best met their requirements. They took the company’s need to focus on hazard spotting and incident reporting as paramount and supported Declans team at every stage.

This collaboration between McAleer & Rushe and EcoOnline has been one of the greatest benefits for Declan.

Bringing in EcoOnline has also encouraged the workplace safety culture in the company. Employees actively take part in the mobile reporting of hazards, and tracking allows them to see the hazard being acknowledged and repaired.

To further encourage employee participation, McAleer & Rushe also recognise the top 10 hazard spotters every month. Declan feels strongly that the increased rate of hazard reporting has a direct relationship to the reduction of accidents across the company.

Management now have ways to produce accurate monthly reports and can get a quick overview of incidents from all sites using the EcoOnline dashboards.
