Menzies Aviation Case Study
Access to Robust Data to Mitigate Risks Efficiently and Effectively
EcoOnline’s EHS solution empowers employees to actively engage with safety protocols, giving Menzies a complete picture of real-time data to address emerging risks.
Menzies Aviation is the leading service partner to the world’s airports and airlines, with operations on six continents, at more than 255 airports in 60-plus countries, serving more than 4 million flights a year and handling over 2 million tonnes of cargo. Supported by a team of over 40,000 highly trained people, the company provides complex and time-critical ground services, including passenger, lounge, and ramp services; air cargo services, including handling, warehousing, and wholesale freight forwarding; and fuel services, including fuel farm management and into-plane fuelling.
Menzies Aviation is recognised across the industry for delivering the safest, most secure, and sustainable services tailored to customers’ needs and is essential to keeping passengers, aircraft, and cargo moving, round the clock, every minute of every day.
Safety and security are Menzies number one priority. Menzies embraces innovative tools, such as the EcoOnline Solution, to continuously improve its positive safety and security culture that strives for zero injuries and zero damage. MORSE is part of the company’s DNA and enables every employee to be motivated to follow the rules because they want to.
“MORSE stands for Menzies Operating Responsibly Safely and Effectively. It’s part of our DNA,” shared Graham Cowing, Vice President of Safety Standards at Menzies. “We want people to operate following the MORSE Code, wherever they work, wherever they are in the business. It’s something that sets us apart from our competitors. We’re very proud of MORSE and we use it in everyday operations.”
It’s no surprise that an organisation that prioritises safety as much as Menzies turned to EcoOnline for a powerful solution to safety management.

The Challenge
A key challenge for Menzies’ Group Safety Standards team was having a comprehensive overview of its safety and security data. Analytics provide vital insight into where hazards originate and their root causes, which can then be mitigated through a range of actions. The team wanted to empower the frontline workforce to report hazards as and when they spotted them so the business could react quickly and take proactive actions in other locations to minimise the risk.
The Solution
The introduction of EcoOnline’s EHS solution in 2019 enabled the team to implement a more proactive approach to safety and security thanks to the digital solution.
Graham and his team are now able to get a 360-view of all hazards, as they have the ability to access real-time data. They and many of their regional colleagues can create graphs, reports, and dashboards to help them understand their leading and lagging indicators better. They can identify potential threats and alert key stakeholders to manage their mitigation programmes.
“We can see a year on year reduction in personal incidents, which is a great achievement. It’s a huge jump every year on how it’s reducing these incidents, so it helps us an awful lot.”

Head of Risk Systems & Data
Streamlined incident reporting for improved accuracy
When incident reporting is handled manually, it leaves room for human error. Before EcoOnline, about 30% of incidents were going unreported, which meant it was impossible to get an accurate view of workplace safety.
“Historically, incident reporting was done manually. It’s never great,” expressed Darren Beamer, Head of Cargo – UK. “You end up capturing 70% of the data and then you are still reliant on somebody to follow through the process, so some can get missed.”
EcoOnline’s cloud-based solution makes it easy for employees to take an active role in managing their safety. By making incident reporting frictionless, employee engagement is improved and Menzies can get a complete picture of where safety stands.
When reporting of hazards increases, incidents decrease
The data has shown that when reporting of hazards increases, incidents decrease. The EcoOnline EHS solution (MORSE) solution has shown an increase of hazard reporting and a decrease in serious incidents.
Menzies employees can conduct ad-hoc hazard inspections using mobile devices. They simply identify the hazard, take a photo, fill in relevant notes, and submit it electronically.
“We can see a year on year reduction in personal incidents, which is a great achievement,” reported Malcolm Rae, Head of Risk Systems & Data at Menzies. “It’s a huge jump every year on how it’s reducing these incidents, so it helps us an awful lot.”
Data-driven insights with custom dashboards
Knowledge is power. With crucial data at their fingertips and updated in real time, Menzies is empowered to make informed decisions to protect their people.
EcoOnline’s custom dashboards provide data-driven insights that help Menzies identify and track key safety trends. By presenting this data in an easily digestible way, Menzies is able to quickly pinpoint risks and take proactive steps to reduce incidents before they occur.
“We then build dashboards in order to assist them and we can easily identify any trends,” said Charlene Warren, Risk Analyst and Systems Support Specialist. “So any slips, trips, near misses, any falls – anything along those lines – and then we can put that into a dashboard and establish where the trends are to help them identify their risks.”
Crystal-clear view
“So at Menzies Aviation, we had what was called MORSE 1. That was the system that we originally used. It was an in-house sort of system, but it really was very limited in what we could do with it,” revealed Malcolm. “We were a growing company so we really needed to get something a little bit more robust, cloud-based, so that’s where we went to EcoOnline in about 2019. We were able to reach much more audience with that, record lots more incidents. We could analyse the data a lot easier so we could really dig deep, find where the problem areas are and fix it, and EcoOnline helps us do that.”
Today, the team can drill down into the data and get key insights from all levels ranging from region, sub-region and station even down to the individual business unit. Alerts are also put in place where team members get an email or text message, depending on their role and where they are located. With a crystal-clear view of the data, key stakeholders within Menzies Aviation can quickly manage threats and risks, then put the necessary corrective actions in place to ensure the ongoing safety of its operations and people.
What’s more, this data is automatically updated in all relevant dashboards no matter where a team member is located. If something happens in one airport in Australia, for instance, and Malcolm is in the UK, he can instantly see the change in the data when he accesses the software.
Inspiring a 40,000-strong workforce
Menzies Aviation holds two MORSE weeks each year, which shine a spotlight on safety and security. Global and local initiatives help reinforce and celebrate the positive MORSE culture. The company also recognises employees living its values everyday with its annual, We Are Menzies Awards. Safety & security is one of five values and also one of the awards. Combined, these global initiatives help to engage and inspire the 40,000-strong workforce to be safe and secure because they want to be, not because they have to.
